One of the great parts of a smaller event like BreyerMidwest is that you actually have time during the weekend’s activities to sit and chat with some incredible artists and hobbyists. These folks offer a wealth of knowledge and are eager to talk about their work with you.
On Saturday, March 22, traveling through the Rockies to join is in Kansas will be the incredible Karen Y. Gerhardt of Westerly Design. If you’re a fan of the “Shannondell” mold, you do not want to miss getting to chat with Karen at our artist’s tables.
Karen began sculpting equines in the 1990’s after years of reworking and repainting Breyer horses. Since then, she has created many popular horse sculptures, cast in resin, and fine ceramic (her main working media now). She was one of the founders of NAMHSA, and has given many years of leadership and innovation to the hobby community.
Her first sculpture for Breyer, "Tregoyd Journeyman", joined the line in 2006, and in 2016 her Shire Gelding sculpture debuted as "Shannondell,” which has continued to be a popular mold among collectors. In addition to her work for Breyer, her sculptures have been consistent champions in the model horse show ring, and has been accepted into juried art shows including Art at the Classic (Draft Horse Classic in northern California) and three American Academy of Equine Art juried exhibitions. In 2005 her "Boreas" sculpture was awarded the Leonard J. Meiselman Memorial Award for Sculpture at the AAEA's Fall Open Juried Equine Art Exhibition, their top prize for sculpture.
Karen is looking forward to meeting fans in March at BreyerMidwest at EquiFest of Kansas!
